He's totally right. Integrity is more important than popularity. Sometimes that hurts - and being misunderstood is a terrible feeling - but if we can stand before God knowing we have made an honest and just decision, it shouldn't matter. Not always that easy in practice.

Basing decisions on the popular choice is a trap for anyone in leadership. There are going to be situations where people are divided and we need to make a call. If we are people pleasers, that's an impossible position. We need to have the strength of our convictions and know who we are. In the end, people will judge and reject us but those who matter and are real friends will be there and support us - and maybe even recognise when we are in a rock and a hard place and have simply done our best! One thing I've figured out in life is that I can't be all things to all people and to try is futile.

There is no truer statement than you can not please all the people all the time. We have to become comfortable with the thought that our course of actions will upset people.

We must fear God more than men!
